Confusion over FAA order 5190.6B

The FAA recently stirred things up with their issuing of order5190.6B. This
is the airport compliance manual. It contains all of the regulations and information on how public funded airports and landing areas operate. The manual went from 94 to 691 pages!

Here are the parts that have many concerned.

  1. No more auto-fuel may be used in aircraft since this is not an approved aviation fuel. (I went to the FAA site and looked over the manual, like usual government publications, it’s buried in there somewhere and I could not find the part that states this.  691pages!)
  2. Trailered aircraft like light sport, powered parachute, weight shift and gyros can not enter public landing areas. The EAA clears up some of this and this seems to have been a misunderstanding of the rules by airport operators.

Here is what I make out of this. At some public airports there are residentuial properties next to them with hangers and aircraft facilities that
use the airports. The FAA calls this through-the-fence (TTF). These residential operations and/or commercial operators will no longer be allowed to enter the public airport property for flight operations.

The EAA has intervened to clear up the trialered aircraft interpretation.
It seems that airport operators misunderstood the rules.

These new rules do not apply to private airports or landing areas like airparks. Please leave a comment on this topic as there is still much confusion in  understaning the exact deatails of this FAA order

Dreams to Flying Machines

Just released
Dreams To Flying Machines is an eBook available at
aircraftbooksonline.com that shows a beginner how to take
your interest/dreams of aircraft and flying and get you up to speed
in the world of aircraft building. It illustrates that building and flying
your own airplane, (that many think is beyond their ability) could
be a new chapter in your life. “It’s amazing what you can do to follow
your dreams with the right information.”

The eBook takes you through the process of picking out the right plane
so that building your dream machine will be an adventure that’s successful.
It strives to make you an expert on the choices of aircraft, the ways
you can construct them and most importantly, how to get through the
registration and certification of your plane.

Owning and flying your own aircraft is such a great privilege we are entitled
to but many never consider that it’s within your grasp. The mystery around the
building and flying aircraft comes from the fact that there are not many
people that you run into that can inspire you because such a small percentage
of people are pilots and a really small percentage that have built a plane.

The book cover ultralight aircraft, light sport aircraft, light aircraft
gyrocoptors, powered parachutes, trikes and gliders.
Kit and plans built aircraft

A very extensively complete chapter on N-numbers, registration,
certification, airworthiness inspection, and maintenance is a
great tool for the homebuilder of aircraft. Our government can make things
difficult, this is the solution.

You find yourself in life constantly searching for meaning and often
adventure. Building and flying your own airplane is probable the most exiting
thing you can do, that once accomplished, you can do for your entire life.
You should at least, read a little more

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I–
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
–Robert Frost (1874-1963)

EAA Troubles

If you fly an ultralight, light sport, light aircraft or other aircraft you are likely to be an EAA member. Usually everything seems quite well run at the organization. But trouble have set it. And their reputation may have been tarnished a bit.

The EAA board decided to search for a new director to be the successor to Tom Poberezny, the current president. The plan was to have an announcement at the 2009 Air Venture fly-in in Osh Kosh this past summer. That never happened.

Political infighting over the picks for the new man have been ongoing and have resulted in a resignation with the possibility of more to come.

Vern Raburn the high profile aviation entrepreneur resigned a few weeks ago over the problems and the current board member who looks to be contemplating this also is David Pasahow,  a board member who is an executive search expert. Pasahow has been instrumental in finding Poberezny’s successor, only to be thwarted after the man found and allegedly approved is dismissed.

What has been transpiring is that after a person is found for the position and allegedly approved by the board, political infighting erupts. The latest was the pick of GAMA’s Pete Bunce. It is thought that he was voted on and approved but then dissent set in. This is not the first time.

Wild pigs and Whooping Cranes

Whopping Cranes on ultralight led migration route

Whopping Cranes on ultralight led migration route

Sometimes wildlife can effect aircraft and other times aircraft effect wildlife.

In the Zimbabwe, at the Harare airport a Chinese built MA60 crashed after hitting a bush pig on takeoff. The Bush pig did not have a clue what to do when it saw the plane coming at it and the crew of the plane did not know what to do after the crash!  Crew” we did not have a clue” on how to handle the emergency after the crash. Luckily no one was killed.

On a brighter note. Whooping Cranes are raised from hatch-lings at the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge by humans dressed in crane outfits to imprint the young. The Cranes migrate to winter grounds in Florida, but since the young birds have no parents to imprint this flight route the first time, Volunteers fly ultralight aircraft over the route while the Whopping cranes follow.

In-Air Aircraft photography

If you have an aircraft that you fly and want to try something fun, arrange a photo/video shoot of your aircraft in the air flying. It really is enjoyable to share is with your friends and family who often may have never seen your plane, let alone seen it in the air flying.

Find a friend with a plane and have them fly along with you for the shoot. It’s best if they are in a two place, then the camera person can focus on your aircraft. Most of the digital cameras today allow video along with photos and its easy to download to computer then YouTube if you wish.

You fly straight and level while your chase plane does all the manuavering around you to get various angles. This keeps you both safe from collision while afording close flying.

The best video comes from breaking away from this pattern and having the chase plane follow you through turns, landings, etc.

Plan your flight to keep safe and share your results to spread the joy of flying around!

Low Priced Ultralight Aircraft

The ongoing poor economy has started to show up in more aircraft for sale at reduced prices. Light aircraft, homebuilts and ultralight and light sport aircraft are becoming harder to sell due to less buyers willing to part with their cash. But this is also a great opportunity for someone who has been sitting on the fence in recent years contemplating buying a aircraft to take the plunge. Many ultralight and light sport plane are sold through the grapevine so ask around. Gas has come down in price so the combination of lower priced aircraft and fuel means flying for less.

“ No one can realize how substantial the air is, until he feels it’s  supporting  power beneath him. It inspires confidence.”

                                                                  — Otto Lilienthal

Ultralight Aircraft Flying

Just how difficult is it to get started flying ultralight aircraft?  Not nearly as difficult as the average person pictures it.

First, ultralight airplanes can be not much more than a powered glider that you hang from or they can look like a real airplane with cockpit, tail, control stick and rudder. ultralight airplanes can be purchased used starting at a couple thousand although $5-10,000 used will get you a real nice aircraft. New about $8-20,000

Where do you buy one? Look in the yellow pages, request a free copy of Trade-a Plane or the best way is find a airport or air-park that has ultralights based there and find out where they are buying them. The most ideal situation is to locate an ultralight air-park where ultralights are the predominate aircraft flown there. Have someone knowledgeable check out you purchase before flying it.

What our government says about ultralight airplanes. A true ultralight is 254 bs or less has one seat (no passengers) and a 5 gallon fuel tank (there are more restriction) YOU DO NOT NEED A LICENSE TO FLY THEM or a pilot certificate.

How do you learn to fly an ultralight airplane? Find a instructor along the same lines that you found where to buy an ultralight. that would be dealers airports or ask other fliers. Around 15 hours of flight instruction often is about the time where you are ready to solo, maybe more maybe less. Its not hard to learn for most especially if you read and study between lessons (known as ground school) Sometimes these are offered in small classes or you can teach yourself. In the larger population areas there are ultralight flight schools that can handle lessons, finding a plane and maintenance.

How safe are ultralights? If you learn to fly properly and you follow all the recommended practices of maintenance, preflight checks and flying ultralight are similar to riding dirt bikes or safer.

I can’t think of anyway you could have more fun than to fly ultralights. Lots of pilots of larger plane find that when it comes down to flying for pure enjoyment that ultralight flying is the way to go.

There are ultralight airplanes, powered parachutes, gyro planes, gliders, trikes, even helicopters. Flight characteristics, training and maintenance varies on the different types of ultralight aircraft.

Now get going and learn to fly, but if you don’t actually buy a aircraft chances are much higher you will not follow through to soloing and continuing to fly
